How many of these eggplant facts did you already know?
Native to Asia, the eggplant is in the same family as the tomato, pepper, and potato: the nightshade family, or Solanaceae. It can come in many colours including purple, black, white, yellow, and pink. Eggplant is used in the cuisines of many countries. Due to its texture and bulk, it is sometimes used as a meat substitute. The fruit is capable of absorbing large amounts of cooking fats and sauces, making for very rich dishes, but salting reduces the amount of oil absorbed. At BCCF this season we are growing two types of eggplant: a ‘traditional’ Italian variety (dark purple and oval-shaped) and a longer and narrower Asian variety (pictured).
