Rita, a long time farm volunteer and our placement students, Ashley and Joseph kicked off this year’s Urban Harvest Community Food Workshop with their presentations.
Ashley showed how she reduces food waste by using up vegetables remaining in her crisper at the end of the week and turning them into a warm chili for her family to enjoy. And in celebration of Black History Month, Joseph shared his culture by teaching the group how to make sumptuous jollof of rice. He is originally from Nigeria and moved to Canada 2 years ago. Although new to this country, his natural cooking skills landed him a job at an African restaurant where he cooks food that he loves to eat from his country of origin.
Engaging placement students through food workshops builds their facilitation skills and allows them opportunity to interact and learn with the community.
